ACMA: 19 percent of Aussies shun home phones

Summary: The number of Australians who replaced their home phones and fixed-line internet services has steadily increased, according to the media watchdog.

As smartphone penetration climbs, more Australians are ditching their fixed-line home phones for a mobile-only existence, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

The data for the ACMA research snapshot was collected up until December 2012, so the numbers could actually be higher now.

Even fixed-line internet is seeing a decline. Out of the 3.3 million people who used their mobile as a home phone substitute, 54 percent of them went online using their mobile phone, a 17 percent jump from the previous corresponding period.

But even so, only 3 percent of the population, around 482,000 completely substituted fixed-line home phone and internet services with their mobiles.

Younger people, aged between 25 and 34, and those who lived in metropolitan areas, were more likely to be mobile-only users. Low-income earners — those who make less than AU$50,000 — were also likely to go mobile only.

Several drivers are spurring this move to mobile, including improved technology, more affordable mobile services, and telcos upgrading their mobile networks to 4G.

  • Mobile is cheap

    You can get unlimited calls on a mobile for less then $40. For a home phone you are looking at $30 (line rental) before you make a call.
    I still need a home line for the internet though.
  • Telemarketers

    I know that when I had a home phone as well as my internet I was paying about $50 a month just to be harassed by telemarketers about 5 times per day to the point where we didn't pick up the phone unless we heard a relative leaving a message.
    It didn't make any sense to my girlfriend and I to be paying more money for people to have the ability to sell crap to me that we didn't even want, this is the same reason I use the Mozilla Firefox add-on Adblock Plus.
