AFP brought into Whirlpool DDoS attacks
The New South Wales and Federal Police will be brought in to investigate continued distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on broadband discussion forum Whirlpool, following a second day of attacks on the website.
Whirlpool hosting company Bulletproof's chief operating officer Lorenzo Modesto confirmed the attack and said the site would be offline today.
"Unfortunately, Whirlpool was DDoSed again last night and as a result, Whirlpool and Bulletproof have agreed to leave the site offline for today to ensure unaffected performance for the rest of Bulletproof's other mission critical hosting customers, including Blackmores, Angus & Robertson and the Australian Olympic Committee," Modesto said.
"The recurrence of the attack last night means that the culprit has achieved their goal of disruption to Whirlpool's service, but now that additional details have been gathered, Bulletproof and Whirlpool will report the DDoS activity details to the AFP for criminal investigation."
Modesto said information gathered on the attacks such as source IP addresses, platform and forensic data gathered from the compromised servers would now be passed onto the New South Wales police who would then escalate the matter to the Australian Federal Police.
"We're not angry [about the attacks], we just need to follow a process and have now gathered enough information to do so effectively," Modesto said.
The Federal Police had not responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.
The site was brought down for 10 hours yesterday morning in the first wave of attacks on the forum.
