Amazon on Wednesday said that it will begin taking HTML5 applications and mobile friendly Web sites in its app store.

The support for HTML5 applications means developers will get broader distribution through the Amazon Kindle Fire ecosystem and be marketed with native apps.

Amazon also said it is offering tools to debug and monetize HTML5 apps. The tools include a Web App Tester, which offers an environment to test applications. There's also an Amazon In-App Purchasing API for JavaScript.

Best practices are also available to walk developers through the submission process.

According to the company HTML5 apps can run better on the Kindle Fire now because it's based on a runtime based on the Chromium project.

Here's a diagram of the submission process.

  • Smart Amazon

I am a fan of Apple and Android tablets, phones, etc., but this is a smart move by Amazon! It creates an "app store" and encourages "run anywhere" development where targeting the Kindle ecosystem is low cost and risk. The fact that there is a review process produces both a QA function and the ability to shape apps to Amazon's benefit.

  • Glad to see HTML5 being used for Kindle

Great to see that Amazon will be using the powerful HTML5 language for their Kindle Fire applications.

Lately, however, I've been using Amazon to sell the books I write on niche subjects. You would think that people would have written the books I'm selling on Amazon, but you would be surprised there aren't any, and mine are selling!

This method I recently bought absolutely baffled me on how easy it is to make money with Amazon's Kindle.
