AOL resists free ISP trend

Summary: AOL will not remove its subscription charges and join the wave of free ISPs, at least for the immediate future, a spokeswoman claimed today.

Despite the success of free Internet services like Freeserve, AOL remains sceptical the business model can work. "Free ISPs may be gathering lots of members, but there is no evidence they are gathering revenue," an AOL spokeswoman said.

In the last few weeks, both BT and Tesco joined the bandwagon and launched free Internet access services.
