Network operator 3 has been forced to pull its update to Android 2.2 for HTC Desire handsets a spokesperson confirmed to ZDNet UK on Friday.

The update began to roll out to customers on 14 October but the company has been forced to stop issuing it in the face of reported problems. One user on the Three support forum said that after installing the Android 2.2 firmware —better known as Froyo— he could no longer access the Android Marketplace.

Another user says that he suffered the same problem but that a factory reset rectified the issue and restored access to the market.

ZDNet UK understands that at the source is a problem between Google and HTC that prevents the update from working properly on HTC handsets, particularly the HTC Desire.

Google had not responded to a request for comment at the time of writing.

Three is the last of the major operators to roll out the Android 2.2 upgrade but is not the only one to have suffered delays to its upgrade plans.

On several occasions Orange was forced to delay issuing the update —which is now available— to its Desire customers, reiterating on more than one occasion that it was "waiting to receive the Orange Android 2.2 Desire update from HTC" and that it was "taking longer than was originally indicated".

Similarly, O2 was forced to withdraw the update after some customers reported that it caused their Desire to freeze after updating.

"I think the update may have bricked my phone. It won't start up now, gets stuck on the O2 blue start-up screen," a customer by the name of 'Potzy' wrote on O2's support forums.

However, some users reported that the O2 went ahead with no problems once they had cleared at least 50MB of free space on the handset.

In contrast to the delays seen on network-specific versions of handsets, Google Nexus One owners have been able to download Froyo for their devices since 28 June.
