11 iPhone, iPad and iPod earphone remote tricks

Summary:A handful of tips to help you get the more out of the remote control fitted to Apple earphones, or EarPods as they are now called.

In amazes me that people invest a lot of money into their electronic gadgets and then fail to make use of a lot of the functionality that they've paid for.

Take the Apple earphones — or EarPods as they are now called — with the remote control device fitted. There's so much that this tiny little remote can do, and yet I only see people using a fraction of functionality they offer. Most people only seem to use the volume control feature, and go around oblivious to the fact that there's so much power at their fingertips.

Let's take a look at what this three-button controller can do.

Taps Action

Single tap middle segment

Play/pause audio.

Single tap top segment

Volume up.

Single tap bottom segment

Volume down.

Double tap and hold middle segment

Fast forward.

Triple tap and hold middle segment


Double tap middle segment

Jump to next track.

Triple tap middle segment

Jump to previous track.

Press and hold middle segment

Activate Siri.

Single tap top segment

Used from within the Camera app to take photo.

 Answer/hang up calls.

Press and hold middle segment

 Reject incoming call.

These tips will work on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. However, it goes almost without saying that call-related funtions only apply to the iPhone.
