Handset makers sold 155 mln phones in Q2 2004, compared with 152.5 mln in Q1. iSuppli said demand in the second half of the year is normally stronger than in the first. The company estimates that 73% of global sales this year will be upgrades. The migration to so-called feature phones, fitted with a digital camera or having a color display, will account for almost 90% of the global volume by 2008, iSuppli forecasts. Camera phones already represent more than a quarter of all handsets being shipped, and they already make up 20% of phones shipped by No. 1 handset maker Nokia, which entered the market late.
