A new report predicts that job growth in the United States will accelerate over the next four years, with much of the growth occurring in healthcare and computers.
The report, compiled by CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), looked at various career fields and their projected demand between the years 2013 and 2017.
The U.S. workforce is projected to grow 4.4% during this period – faster than the recession-plagued 2009 to 2013 period (3.5%), but still down from the pre-recession 2003 to 2007 period (5.8%). Most of the growth will be in high-wage occupations ($21.14 per hour and above), and occupations requiring college degrees are growing significantly faster than those that do not.
Sixty-one percent of occupations expected to grow by eight percent or more require a college degree, the report states. Associate degree and master’s degree occupations are each projected to grow eight percent, while bachelor’s degree jobs are projected to grow six percent.
The fastest-growing healthcare occupations – personal care aides and home health aides -- top the list, and are projected to add nearly a half million jobs by 2017. The aging population is driving demand here.
On the technology side, growth is being fueled by new software as a service (SaaS) companies that are emerging, as well as continued heavy investment in computer and digital infrastructure.
Interestingly, market research specialists are also prominent on the list -- a reflection of the increasingly competitive climate in today's global economy, and efforts to employ big data to compete on analytics.
