Bigmir.net, the statistical service of SputnikMedia published a report on Internet usage in Ukraine. In October the country faced the upcoming Presidential elections, and almost 4 mln Ukrainians (3 993 789) went online according to Bigmir. Daily about 360K Ukrainians are online, during the weekdays the average rises to 406K with much of the audience accessing Internet from work. On average Ukrainians visit 2.85 pages on each site and spend 3.09 minutes at each Internet address.

Geographically the bulk of Ukrainian Internet users is located in Kyiv, the capital of the country - 55.39% resides in this city, while 30.15% of online Ukrainians live in other large cities (Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa, Harkiv, lviv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya). Not only the residents of Ukrainian capital comprise the bulk of Internet users in Ukraine, they're also the most active ones, generating 64.58% of the pageviews. Residents of Dnepropetrovsk generated 8.03% of pageviews, in Odessa Internet users generated 4.92% of all the pageviews.

60% of Ukrainians use the screen resolution of 1024x768 while viewing the Web, the second most popular is 800x600 (23%), the third most popular is 1280x1024 (10%). Overwhelming majority - 73% - use 32 bit color depth. Microsoft Windows XP is the most popular operating system in Ukraine with 58% of Internet users preferring it to Microsoft Windows 2000 (15%) and Microsoft Windows 98 (15%). Ukrainians apparently are not too fond of Microsoft Windows ME (4%), Microsoft Windows NT (1%), Apple Macintosh operating system (1%) or Linux (1%).

With the Windows dominance in place it comes as little surprise that the most popular Web browsers in Ukraine are Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (72%) and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (12%). Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, Netscape Navigator 6 and Opera 7.2 each have a 5% market share among Ukrainians. BigMir.net, Ukr.net, Google, Yandex and Rambler generated the most traffic to the Ukrainian Web sites. The first two portals have Ukrainian origin, domain name Google.com.ua belongs to a publicly traded Californian company, while Yandex and Rambler are Russian Internet portals and search engines.

As far as the search engine usage among Ukrainians, Russian Yandex, American Google, Russian Rambler, Ukrainian Meta and Russian Mail.ru took the leadership with MSN search engine closing in on Mail.ru at 6th place. As far as the search queries, Ukrainians were mostly looking for term papers, dating, horoscopes, job postings and MP3s, which points to relatively young audience.
