Teradata rolls out big data apps, updates Loom
Teradata is announcing several key product updates and rollouts ahead of next week's Strata + Hadoop summit.
The data-warehousing provider has rolled out a suite of new apps powered by the Aster AppCenter. The apps are industry-specific and purpose built, and according to Teradata VP Chris Twogood, they have all been tested with real customers.
The apps are delivered as pre-built templates that include analytic logic, data schema and interactive visualization, and can be configured by Teradata Professional Services.
Teradata says AppCenter will be available by the end of the second quarter of 2015 in conjunction with the Teradata Aster Database 6.0.
The company also announced version 2.4 of Teradata Loom, the metadata management technology it gained after acquiring Revelytix last year. Loom is compatible with a bevy of Hadoop distros such as Cloudera, MapR, Hortonworks and Pivotal.

"Teradata Loom offers breakthrough capability to maximize the value of the data lake with automated tools that shrink the learning curve, decrease complexity, and speed the generation of exceptional insights to business users. Instead of taking months, big data analytic projects can now advance in hours."
The new features in 2.4 are designed to increase productivity for data lake developers and users. Among several enhancements to the new version is compatibility with Java Script Object Notation (JSON), which is key when wrangling data from mobile devices, sensors and web browsers. The new version also expands metadata depth beyond tables down to the partition level.
The Teradata Loom Community Edition 2.3 is available now, for free, while Teradata Loom 2.4 will be available by March 31.
