Intel will release its bargain basement version of the Pentium II in April amid suggestions that it is just an interim product for the sub-$1,000 PC market.

Codenamed Covington, the processor will be given a new brand name and utilise the P6 microarchitecture. It is expected to be a PII 266MHz processor without any level 2 cache.

However, the company is expected to release an additional chip more suited to this market, later in the year, according to insiders, who add that the company has plans for around 16 different versions of the PII chip.
