Problems with Amazon's cloud service Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) have had a knock-on effect on websites which use the Amazon infrastructure, including social news site reddit and user-generated question-and-answer site Quora.

Visitors to reddit were greeted with a notice saying "reddit is down", while a note on Quora said it was suffering "an unexpected outage".

While Amazon has not yet commented on the situation, its cloud computing service health dashboard showed problems with the North Virginia centre.

According to the website, Amazon first began investigating issues with EC2 at 09:41 BST and confirmed at 10:18 BST that "connectivity errors" were affecting EC2 services.

The Amazon Elastic Block Store, a service that can be attached to EC2 to provide advanced storage features, has also been experiencing issues caused by increased latencies.

Question and answer web service Quora has also experienced problems

While the Amazon website reported that EC2 services were beginning to recover at 11:20(BST), by 15:40(BST) Amazon was still reporting EC2 issues.

Amazon has given no indication of when service would be fully restored. The company could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
