Amazon guarantees that UK jobs are safe

Over 800 employees assured that they're not facing the chop in Amazon's pursuit of profitability

Internet retailer Amazon.co.uk promised all its UK-based employees that their jobs are safe Wednesday, a day after it was announced that 15 percent of the company's US workforce were facing the chop.

A spokesman for Amazon.co.uk confirmed that the British arm of the company would be unaffected by the changes. "The restructuring does not affect the UK. All job losses will be in the US," he explained.

Over 800 people are employed at Amazon.co.uk's British operations, based in Slough, Berkshire and near Milton Keynes.

Amazon.com announced that 1,300 US jobs were to be cut after revealing better than expected results for Q4 2000. The cuts are primarily coming from the closure of a distribution centre in Georgia and a Seattle customer service centre.
