Amazon reduces cloud prices across globe
Amazon has reduced the prices of four of the core components of its Amazon Web Services cloud.
The price cut, announced on Monday evening, marks the 19th price cut in Amazon Web Services's six years of existence and is designed to lower the costs of growing an AWS deployment. Prices have been reduced for elastic compute cloud (EC2) rentable instances; the relational database service (RDS); Hadoop-variant Elastic MapReduce; and ElastiCache.
"Driving costs down for our customers is part of the DNA of Amazon and therefore also part of the DNA of AWS," Amazon's chief technology officer, Werner Vogels, wrote in a blog post on Monday. "We strongly believe that if we can help our customers reduce their costs, they are likely to be more successful in the long term."
Prices have unevenly been cut across Amazon's eight global datacentre hubs, so for a full list of price changes it's best to visit the Amazon pricing page.
Prices for reserved instances — rentable virtual machines that have been booked in advance — have fallen by "as much as 37 percent" and standard instances have dropped by up to "10 percent", Amazon's senior manager for cloud computing solutions, Jeff Barr, wrote in a separate blog post.
Earlier in February Amazon cut the cost of keeping data in its mainstay Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
