AMD amps up performance-per-watt with new Opteron chip

Advanced Micro Devices has shipped a new Opteron chip that it is pitching as a processor alternative for servers that will be used in cloud computing infrastructure or "hyperscale" data centers.

The Six-Core AMD Opteron EE processor operates at just 40 watts average CPU power (ACP), which compares with the 75 watts required by its predecessor. It's being positioned as an option for system builders or systems integrators who require it for custom solutions using low power.
