EE Times reports on an Info-Tech Research study that says 50 percent of small to mid-size enterprises will rely on VoIP by 2008.

The study found that 23 percent of those types of companies are already using VoIP.

What's even more interesting than those numbers is Info-Tech analyst George Goodall's assertion that rather than be an exclusive fertile ground for entrenched VoIP solution providers such as Nortel and Avaya, this ramp-up will serve as an incubator for nimble companies specializing in specialty VoIP management solutions.

"These products aren't just scaled down version(s) of large-enterprise systems," EE Times quotes Goodall as saying. "Potentially, they're category killers."
