Antoine de Saint-Exup

Up there in the foremost echelons of my favourite quotes is this:“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.

Up there in the foremost echelons of my favourite quotes is this:

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”

For me, this epitomises Free Software: the wood, the work and the orders are the Software itself, whilst the “vast and endless sea” is Freedom. How ridiculously romantic of me ;)

I had buried the quote in some notes, and was trying to unearth it a few days ago, tracking down the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry on Wikipedia. So it was edifying to see it on today’s Google doodle, marking the 110th anniversary of his birth.
