Add Apcera to the growing list of Platform-as-a-Service providers. Former VMware exec Derek Collison's new company, Apcera, is off the ground.

Very little is publicly known about Apcera, except that Collison intends to harness OpenStack and extend the DevOps capabilities of Platform-as-a-Service to enterprises with a special focus on management.

Apcera's focus will be on providing enterprises with more visibility and control over their on-premise and public cloud-based applications, according to one site. Such capabilities will be necessary for enterprises to adhere to regulatory requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley.

Apcera recently received $2.2 million in funding from Andreesen Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins and True Ventures.

It will be interesting to see how Apcera's platform is differentiated from the Cloud Foundry PaaS Collison helped develop for VMware.
