Apple appears to have let slip the date of availability for iOS 4.1, the next key upgrade to its operating system for mobile devices.

On Friday, Apple's website showed a caption that said the iOS 4.1 update would be available on September 8th 2010. Numerous media websites, such as engadget, reported on this and since then the page has reverted to telling the public the update is 'coming soon'.

iOS 4.1 sits behind several new software features in Apple's latest products, which were unveiled last Wednesday in San Francisco, including a new game centre, an iTunes-specific social network named Ping and high dynamic range photography, among others.

However, the new features will not be coming to iPad customers, as they will be upgraded directly from iOS 3.2.2 to 4.2 in November, 2010.
