A teaser page touting key features of the iOS 4.2 software update has appeared on the official Apple website ahead of the software's imminently expected release.

The page says only that the update will be "coming soon" but does give a flavour of what the new iPad OS will bring.

Among the headline features iOS4.2 will bring multitasking — the ability to run multiple apps at the same time — to the iPad for the first time, a common criticism at the device's launch in May.

The update will also deliver the option of creating folders for organising apps, improve email management using a unified inbox, and allow users to search web pages for specific words or phrases.

The company's recently launched AirPrint and AirPlay apps will also be included; the former allows users to print directly to compatible web-enabled printers and the latter will allow wireless streaming of music, videos and photos from an iPad to an Apple TV.

Apple also says that iOS 4.2 will bring new business-focused features that include new device management options, stronger security and improved enterprise integration.

In total Apple says that the OS refresh will bring "100+ new features and innovations", which includes a new gaming centre designed to bring together likeminded gamers in easily finding a multiplayer match.

On 1 September Steve Jobs announced that the iPad update would arrive in November, which was closely followed on 16 September by the release of iOS 4.2 to developers.
