Apple's new iPad announcement: The numbers to know

Summary:Along with the specs of the new iPad and upgraded Apple TV, we got an update on some of Apple's more impressive vital stats.

After months of speculation, Apple finally unveiled the third-generation of the iPad. But it wasn't all about software and hardware upgrades on Wednesday.

CEO Tim Cook, senior vice president Phil Schiller, and other executives from both Apple and its partners took the stage at the Yerba Buena Center of the Arts in San Francisco earlier today. Along with the specs of the new iPad and upgraded Apple TV, we got an update on some of Apple's more impressive vital stats.

Here's a snapshot, by the numbers:

  • 25 billion: The number of iOS apps downloaded worldwide. The 25 billionth was said to have been downloaded in China.
  • 315 million: The number of iOS devices (iPhone, iPadiPod touch) sold in 2011
  • 172 million: The number of "post-PC" devices that Apple sold in 2011, which turned out to be 76 percent of Apple's revenue.
  • 110 million: The number of visitors to Apple Stores globally during the fourth quarter of 2011
  • 100 million: The number of iCloud users since the cloud-based service launched to Apple customers last fall
  • 62 million: The number of iOS devices sold in during the fourth quarter
  • 15.4 million: The number of iPads sold during Q4 2011 alone
  • 585,000: The approximate number of apps in the App Store. More than 200,000 of these are custom apps for the iPad.
  • 1080p: A spec count that played a big role for both the new iPad and Apple TV announcements. For example, the latest version of Apple TV has a new 1080p user interface. The new iPad has a 1080p display with 1080p HD video recording.
  • $499: Apple's consistent starting price for the new iPad series
  • $399: The reduced starting price for the iPad 2
  • 362: Apple's brick-and-mortar retail store count worldwide
  • 5.1: The latest version of iOS, part of which is rolling out in select areas today
