Asda is now stocking an 8-inch Arnova tablet running the Android operating system, priced at less than £100.

The Arnova 8 offers an 8.4-inch touchscreen display, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a 4GB internal memory that can be expanded by using a microSD card.

Under the bonnet the device runs Android 2.1, also called Eclair. Competing devices, such as the Huawei MediaPad, run Android 3.2, which has been specifically designed for tablets.

Asda is touting the device's multimedia and e-reader capabilities, and said that the Arnova 8 can achieve 25 hours of music playback from just one full battery charge. Naturally, given its Android OS, it also provides access to the Android Market app catalogue.

The budget device went on sale for £99 in larger Asda stores and via its online shop over the weekend, a spokesperson told ZDNet UK on Monday.
