Users of Microsoft's email service can now make and receive Skype calls directly from their inbox.

Based around content formatting and communications services, the APIs are designed to set up a direct route to data and other operational features within AT&T's network.

In turn, the APIs can be used to automate functions such voice and video calls while also integrating speech and video services into applications.

Hinting at the motivations behind this venture, AT&T pointed toward a recent study from M2M communications firm Mind Commerce, which predicted that APIs in the telecommunications industry will grow balloon into $157 billion in global revenues by 2018.

As further evidence of how serious AT&T is in this regard, the phone company asserted it already generates more than 7.8 billion API calls per month, citing figures from API-based services network ProgrammableWeb.

AT&T has been busy touting its enterprise strategy this week.

Earlier today , the nation's second largest mobile provider announced in partnership with Microsoft that the two tech titans would be collaborating to connect AT&T's virtual private networking technology to Microsoft's Windows Azure public cloud service.

The new offering is expected to become available during the first half of 2014.
