In a bid to stay relevant in the online world, Australia Post plans to release its own "digital mailbox" app to make email communications, payments and document storage more secure, while expanding its parcel locker footprint and opening new post superstores.
Australia Post said today in a statement that the new digital mailbox will come in app form for mobile and laptop devices, and feature "bank level security" to ensure that customers wanting to pay bills, store files and receive email can do it safely. Australia Post said that the mailbox will be so secure that customers can store a copy of their passport or tax records in the app. Australia Post is currently accepting registrations of interest for the service.
More details on the service are scarce at this stage, as Australia Post hopes to have it out towards the end of the year, but company chairman David Mortimer hopes to have the digital mailbox sit alongside the physical mailbox for people's personal communications. Australia Post is pitching to all segments with the new digital mailbox push.
"The Australia Post Digital MailBox will allow businesses, government entities and customers to communicate through a secure online portal that can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, wherever they are," Mortimer said in a statement.
The digital mailbox push from Australia Post comes a week after Computershare, Salmat and Zumbox Software teamed up to create Digital Post Australia — a partnership that also looks to provide customers with a free, secure digital mailbox.
"We are taking one of the oldest forms of communication and making it more relevant to today's marketplace. The Australian consumer is ready for the next generation of mail delivery and the benefits it will bring will be significant and widespread for both consumers and business," said David Hynes, chairman of Digital Post Australia.
Australia Post also announced today that it would open 30 new flagship post superstores and expand its parcel pick-up lockers after their successful trial in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
"With our parcel volumes growing a staggering 13 per cent since July last year due to online shopping, our superstores are where people's physical lives will connect with their digital lives," said Ahmed Fahour, CEO of Australia Post.
"With online shopping booming, Australians have told us they want to be able to collect their parcels at a time and place that suits them. We are now extending parcel lockers to a total of 10 sites, with plans for a national roll-out to further expand this service.
"Customers have told us they don't have time to wait in a queue so we're also investing in self-service terminals in our superstores so customers can skip the queue and spend more time doing the things they enjoy," Fahour added.
Fahour said that the new superstores will look to bridge the gap between online shopping and physical post by outfitting each of them with iMacs, iPads and other "digital screens" to access what they need.
