Avaya helps Asian SMBs communicate

The IP telephony vendor aims to help office workers in SMBs communicate more easily when they are in or out of the office.

SINGAPORE--Communication is at the heart of any business, and Avaya hopes its latest telephony products will help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Southeast Asia communicate more effectively.

The Avaya one-X products, which were launched in the United States at the VoiceCon conference on Mar. 7, are available in three flavors: Quick Edition, Desktop Edition, and Mobile Edition for Nokia S60.

The Avaya one-X Quick Edition, which is based on software from Avaya's acquisition of Nimcat Networks in November last year, is an IP telephony communication application for use in Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based peer-to-peer systems. It is targeted at small offices or branch offices with less than 20 phones.

Workers on-the-go can use the Avaya one-X Desktop Edition, which turns Windows-based PCs or laptops into intelligent SIP-based collaboration endpoints. Users are able to make, receive and handle voice calls, send instant messages to one another and track each others' presence using an intuitive graphical user interface.

The one-X Mobile Edition for Nokia S60 equips Nokia S60 enterprise smart phones with access to Avaya's flagship Communication Manager software, which allows users to be accessible via one business number and to use a single voicemail system whether they are in the office or out.

No matter where they are, users can also access the same enterprise communication capabilities found in the office, such as call conferencing, call transfer, call recording, abbreviated dialing, all using the corporate IP network.

The Avaya one-X solutions will be available in Southeast Asia in the second half of 2006.

According to Lawrence Byrd, director of the company's IP telephony and mobility division, Avaya will announce a one-X partnership with phone maker Samsung, similar to its relationship with Nokia "some time soon".
