The news from the unified communications company comes at a time when Silicon Valley (and beyond) is in the midst of a heated debate over telecommuting following the announcement of the upcoming ban at Yahoo.

However, it looks like Avaya's approach is more about improving security to reduce roadblocks (and worries) while enabling more collaboration and productivity.

Specifically, the latest version of Avaya's Session Border Controller for Enterprise (SBCE) has been revamped to deflect Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, viruses, and configuration errors.

This includes "VPN-less" access in which employees can have a dedicated phone line that automatically authenticates to one IP address on a single SBCE without having to connect to a virtual private network, which should reduce operational costs for both a VPN and an optimized IP address.

On a more device-specific level, Avaya has some specific enhancements just for iPhone and iPad with protected access to mobile UC capabilities (i.e. video, instant messaging, etc.) across public networks.

Avaya is touting that these new solutions are more cost-effective in securing Session Initiation Protocols (SIP) applications across next-generation networks while also managing emerging BYOD strategies.
