Amazon Web Services wants businesses to be able to connect directly to its cloud via a dedicated network connection, for a price.

AWS Direct Connect, announced by Amazon Web Services on Thursday, is designed to create a reliable, stable connection between the AWS cloud and a business's datacentre, colocation environment or office.

"In addition to enhancing privacy, dedicated circuits will generally result in more predictable data transfer performance and will also increase bandwidth between your datacentre and AWS," Jeff Barr wrote in a blog post on Thursday. "Additionally, users of dedicated circuits will frequently see a net reduction in bandwidth costs."

Direct Connect will initially be available in 1Gbps and 10Gbps connections from an AWS-Equinix datacentre in Ashburn, Virginia. Amazon plans to expand the service out to San Jose, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo and Singapore in "the next several months", it said.

Along with the new connectivity product the company announced expanded features and the general release of its Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and the introduction of identity federation.

Customers can mount the AWS VPC in multiple availability zones, which are disaster-proofed distinct parts of each global region. This, AWS said, should add redundancy. Windows Server 2008 R2 also became supported by the VPC.

Prices for a 1Gbps port begin at $0.30 (£0.18) per hour, AWS said, with data transfers into AWS free, but data transfer out costing $0.02 per GB.
