Defense and security company BAE Systems recently completed a series of successful gun fire tests of the 155-mm Long Range Land Attack Projectiles (LRLAP) as part of ongoing testing.
The test was conducted at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The purpose of the test was to evaluate the performance of the LRLAP tactical rocket motors in a range of different conditions -- including temperatures -- and to view the live performance of the tactical warhead.
BAE Systems considers the test a success, with all test requirements being met or exceeding expectations. The LRLAP proved that it could be reliably and affordably locked-on target through the assistance of rockets, launching through a gun, and by using GPS technology.
Steven Schultz, acting vice president of Vehicle Systems at BAE Systems, said:
"We are pleased by the success of these guided flight gun tests. This is a critical step forward for the U.S. Navy's 155-mm LRLAP program. BAE Systems continues to progress on track for our qualification to support deployment of the Advanced Gun System on board the DDG 1000."
The LRLAP has been designed to be an affordable alternative to currently used missiles -- but importantly, a design that can be ship-launched. BAE Systems' next required step is a Critical Design Review for the LRLAP, which is expected to happen before the end of the year.
