Earlier this year, Lionsgate announced the first new release to be made available via Facebook on the same date as the DVD, the Blu-ray Disc, and the download. Shangri-La Entertainment and Tuff Gong Pictures just beat that deal.
They teamed up with F-commerce firm Milyoni and today announced that the upcoming Bob Marley documentary will be the first U.S. movie ever to be made available for streaming on Facebook the same day as its theatrical release: April 20, 2012. Then again, Facebook fans get to watch The Avengers early (before it's out in theatres).
The movie "Marley" will be available online on the Bob Marley Facebook Page, which has over 37 million Likes (and is thus in the top 20 most popular Pages in the world). Thanks to Milyoni's Social Cinema technology, you'll be able to watch the movie on demand while chatting with friends, answering questions, as well as sharing and tagging favorite clips.
The PG-13 film will be available to stream online for a limited time starting at 12:01 AM for $7. You can pay via PayPal or by credit card. An undisclosed portion of the proceeds from the film's Facebook sales will go to the charity organization Save the Children.
Marley is being touted as the first film to tell the definitive life story of the musician, revolutionary, and legend – from his earliest days to his rise to international superstardom. The film features an incredible soundtrack, rare footage, archival photos, as well as performances and interviews with Bob's family, friends, and bandmates. Marley is directed by Academy Award-winner Kevin Macdonald, produced by Steve Bing and Charles Steel, as well as executive produced by Ziggy Marley and Island Records' founder Chris Blackwell.
