Box launches Shuttle, aims to land data migration deals

Box wants more of your enterprise data and is launching a service called Shuttle to do the heavy lifting.

The content sharing and cloud storage platform outlined Shuttle, a service that includes data-migration tools from Box's consulting unit.

CEO Aaron Levie said Shuttle is the latest product update aimed at large enterprises. Box launched Zones to address data sovereignty as well as various security and compliance enhancements.

"Shuttle has a software side and managed service," said Levie. "It is designed to move large amounts of information to the cloud."

Shuttle is in beta this week. A large financial services firm as well as other companies have been using it for large-scale migrations. Levie said the product has been four to five years in the making, as customers have asked for the service, and Box had to experiment with different techniques.

"We experimented with a few different routes," said Levie. "No storage system of document management system is the same. We had to make sure we could move the data without losing some of the organization, schema, and context."

The goal is obvious: Box wants to make migrating data from legacy systems as easy as possible so it can become the system of record.

Shuttle includes planning and strategy, content analysis and lifecycle assessment, and permission and attribute matching.

Levie said pricing will be disclosed when Shuttle is generally available in the fall, but he noted there will be three tiers depending on an enterprise's needs.
