Brocade announced that it has acquired Ruckus Wireless for approximately $1.2 billion in cash and stock.

Based in Sunnyvale, California, Ruckus Wireless makes Wi-Fi hotspot technology for the mobile internet market, among other things. Ruckus counts the Marriott group and the Angel baseball stadium in Los Angeles among its customers.

San Jose-based Brocade plans to use Ruckus to expand its networking portfolio overall but especially surrounding the growing demand for wireless internet access in large, public spaces.

To that end, Brocade said Ruckus will help focus the company's market pursuit around various edge services, including 5G mobile services, Internet of Things, smart cities, OpenGtm technology for in-building wireless, and LTE/Wi-Fi convergence.

Brocade CEO Lloyd Carney said the deal also creates a combined organization that is more agile and pure play, which will help accelerate product development and innovation.

"This strategic combination will position us to expand our addressable market and technology leadership with Ruckus' fast-growing wireless LAN products, and supports our vision to deliver market-leading New IP solutions that enable the network to become a platform for innovation," Carney said in a statement.
