A power failure at a major exchange in Birmingham has caused broadband outages for BT customers nationwide, the company has confirmed.

Beginning at around 1pm on Monday, people began complaining on Twitter that they were having problems with their broadband connections. The reports came from Brighton, Llanwrda and other towns around the UK, suggesting the outage was widespread.

"Major BT broadband fault happening in NI right now. Just seen ALL our BT BB clients go offline," Garrett Murphy, based in Northern Ireland, said in a post to Twitter.

Many of the people posting to Twitter said they could not reach BT's helpline numbers for information.

BT acknowledged the issue on Twitter and in a post to its service status page at 1:45pm, where it apologised and estimated it would take two hours to fix the problem.

In a statement, BT said it had brought back most of the broadband connections, but did not say how many people were affected by the service interruption.

"Our engineers are on-site and the majority of customers' service has already been restored. We are working to restore service to remaining customers as soon as possible this afternoon," BT said.

"Should any customers continue to experience difficulty in accessing their broadband service, they are advised to turn their Hub or modem off and on again."
