BT customers in Northern Ireland, the north of England and parts of Scotland suffered a broadband outage on the weekend.

The telco said on Monday that the disruption, which was caused by a technical fault "at an exchange in the Edinburgh area on Friday night", was over by the early hours of Saturday morning.

"BT's engineering teams worked throughout the night to resolve outstanding customer issues and to monitor the performance of the network," the company said in a statement.

However, BT refused to confirm the number of customers that were affected. According to the Press Association, that number stood at 20,000.
