BBC News reports that BT Groupwill offer one year's worth of free Internet telephone calls to the first 50,000 subscribers who sign up for the carrier's broadband servicefrom nowthrough December 31.The calls will go through BT Communicator, which is BT's Internet telephony software.
Sorry, though, your colleagues and friends in the UK won't be able to call you for free. Gratis international access is not part of the deal, mate.
Still, I think this arrangement is pretty smart. Those with a propensity for broadband are more likely to be technologically receptive to IP. BT has 1.3 million broadband subscribers, but seems to be losing traction.
Oh, and a headset comes with the deal. You wouldn't want to lose prospective customers just because they don't want to go out and buy a headset!
Are you listening, stateside VoIP providers?
