BT has named the latest swathe of exchanges set to be fibre-enabled - opening up access to superfast broadband services from BT or its ISP customers to consumers in the area.

The list of 114 exchanges serves more than one million business and consumer premises, according to BT's wholesale arm Openreach - and includes Basildon, Clacton-on-Sea, Sunderland and Wrexham North.

Broadband users in these exchange areas can expect download speeds of up to 40Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10Mbps to be made available after the upgrade. The upgrades are due to be completed by autumn 2012, according to Openreach.

The fibre exchange rollout comes as part of BT's £2.5bn next-generation broadband investment programme to expand availability of up-to-40Mbps broadband speeds and above to two-thirds of the UK by 2015.

Since BT announced its fibre investment, the UK government has created a £530m pot of public money to help fund superfast broadband rollouts beyond BT's two-thirds threshold. The government is hoping this money will help push availability of 25Mbps+ broadband to 90 per cent of the UK by 2015.

BT is likely to be one of the companies bidding to win local tenders to get a slice of this cash. "We will be engaging with Broadband Delivery UK [the government body overseeing the distribution of the £530m fund] and local councils to offer our help and expertise," Mike Galvin, Openreach managing director for Next Generation Access, said in a statement.

The full list of 114 exchanges that will get the BT fibre upgrade can be found here.
