Buffalo Technology is one of the top manufacturers of consumer NAS devices, typified by its LinkStation appliances. It also has a solid range of TeraStation products aimed at SMEs, which are sold pre-populated with hard disks. The latest model is the TeraStation TS5400D, a four-bay device available in capacities of 4, 8, 12 and 16TB. A two-bay version, the TS5200D, is also available.
Powered by a 1.86GHz dual-core Intel Atom D2550 processor with 2GB of DDR3 RAM, the TS5400D is housed in a compact black desktop chassis with a lockable front door covering the hot-swap drive bays. At the rear are dual Gigabit Ethernet ports that support standard port trunking schemes including 802.3ad dynamic link aggregation. There are also two USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports, plus a D-sub serial terminal connector for use with a UPS. There is no e-SATA port, however.
The TS5400D ships by default with the drives formatted as a RAID-5 array, but it also supports standard 0, 1, 6, 10 and JBOD RAID modes. The user interface has been completely redesigned, and is now much more user-friendly, including an optional simplified menu overview page. As the RAID is preconfigured, with initial setup just a matter of configuring user rights, shared folders and the various network services. Network discovery and share mapping can be done using the bundled Buffalo NAS Navigator 2 application.
More consumer-focussed features such as a DLNA media server and Bittorrent client are included, along with services of more interest to SMEs such as simultaneous NAS/iSCSI target operation, web and SQL servers plus a surveillance server that supports up to 10 IP cameras. Web access is via FTP or the free BuffaloNAS.com web portal service, and Amazon S3 cloud storage is also supported.
We ran our standard Passmark Performance Test 7 disk tests on a 4TB version of the product, and it returned very respectable results even over a single Gigabit LAN connection. Running the File Server workload it managed 48MB/s, for the Web Server workload 67MB/s, Database workload 9MB/s and Workstation workload 19MB/s. The standard Disk Mark score was 550, with 57MB/s for sequential reads, 49MB/s for sequential writes and 46MB/s for random read/writes.
