House Speaker Nancy Peloci (D-CA) is facing some crucial decisons on proposed changes in American energy laws. Her hometown newspaper says the Speaker hasn't said what she'll do about either tougher mileage standards for cars, or about forcing renewable energy for generating more of the nation's electricity.

Currently, 6.5% of American electricity comes from hydroelectric and less than 3% from renewable sources like solar & wind.

Regardless of what the House of Representatives passes, there'll need to be a compromise with a Senate-passed bill. The Senate did call for higher gas mileage standards for new cars in the future. That rankles some ranking Democrats from Michigan because Detroit's big car makers don't want to be told what to do. President Bush has recently spoken in favor of better gas mileage for new cars.

This week may be crucial in deciding what energy bill gets passed, if any, by the House.
