Brocade Communications has announced that the former CEO of a company it acquired (Rhapsody Networks) will take over its helm. Stepping down, but staying on as board director is Greg Reyes and stepping up is Michael Klayko. In my discussions with server vendors, particularly ones like IBM, HP, and Dell that have blade offerings, virtually all are in agreement that to succeed in the enterprise, they have little choice to dance with Brocade. IBM was the first to follow through, putting Brocade on its blade dance card last year with an offering that I call "Brocade-on-a-blade" (see Blade innovation slows but differentiators still exist) and others have said they are in discussions with Brocade. Why might Brocade's star, along with other top storage companies rise? As evidenced by the continually rising storage limits associated with online services such as GMail, sheer volume is what will win customers whether its for e-mail, other forms of text (eg: blogs), audio files, photos, or even video and someone has to provide all that storage gear. One of those someones will most likely be Brocade.
