CES 2010: RIM announces wireless BlackBerry Presenter module

BlackBerry devices are extremely popular in the enterprise market and one thing that many of us in the business world do a lot of on the road is give presentations. LG recently rolled out their projector attachment that fits right onto the LG eXpo smartphone and here at CES 2010 RIM has announced an accessory to use with your BlackBerry to aid in giving presentations. The BlackBerry Presenter is NOT a small projector like the one we see from LG, but it is a module that connects via Bluetooth to your BlackBerry while physically being plugged into a projector or display so that you can display Microsoft PowerPoint presentations stored on your phone.

Some smartphones already support TV out capability that lets you perform this function via a cabled connection, but there is something to be said for having wireless capability. With the BlackBerry Presenter you can walk around the room with your BlackBerry in hand and control the slideshow without interruption. There is a free desktop manager application and also specific software for your BlackBerry to control the presentations. If you upgrade the included DataViz Documents To Go client on your BlackBerry you can create presentations on the go, but I need to check with RIM to see if you can then control them with this software without a desktop connection.

Specifications for the BlackBerry Presenter include:

  • Conveniently small and light -- 3.4" x 2.4" x 0.9" and 140g
  • Video Formats Supported: NTSC, PAL
  • Video Cable Support: S-Video, VGA
  • Power Connection: Micro USB
  • Display Resolution Support: 640x480 (VGA), 800x600 (SVGA), 1024x768 (XGA)
  • Bluetooth Version 2.0 + EDR, Class 1.5
  • Carrying Case: Synthetic Leather
  • Support for most PowerPoint animations and transitions
  • No additional file processing required - present files directly without having to pre-process the file on the PC
  • Languages Supported: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish

The BlackBerry Presenter will be available at some undisclosed date for $199. It is being shown here at CES so I will try to find one to check out.
