CES 2010: Sprint announces Overdrive 3G/4G wireless hotspot

I have a Verizon MiFi and find it to be an essential tool for connectivity, but I may not have it much longer after having seen Sprint's announcement last night for the upcoming Overdrive 3G/4G mobile hotspot. The Overdrive gives you WiMax (4G) or 3G connectivity, depending on the area you are in, via a wireless connection just like the MiFi. I actually live in an area where the 4G network has been rolled out and this may be the device for me to get. Sprint will be launching in on 10 January with a new price plan of $59.99 per month, which is what I pay now for my 3G MiFi.

The Overdrive is manufactured by Sierra Wireless and key features include a LCD that provides important information such as battery life and internet connection status, as well as an easy-to-use web interface for customizing settings. Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot also includes built-in GPS capability (on 3G), MicroSD slot for up to 16 GB memory cards creating shared storage with up to five connected devices, and an extended Wi-Fi range of up to 150 feet. The Overdrive is 3.14 inches (h) x 3.14 inches (w) x 0.61 inch (d) and weighs in at 4.51 ounces.

The Overdrive will be available early next week, 10 January, for $149.99 with a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year service agreement. I am not sure what the price is for those that do not want a contract, but will try to find out.
