CES 2014: Sony Xperia Z1s coming to T-Mobile, high end Z1 Compact also revealed

Summary:The water resistant Xperia Z1 has been available as an unlocked model and is finally coming to T-Mobile USA with an increased level of water resistance.

Sony revealed a couple new smartphones at CES yesterday. The first device is a slightly modified Xperia Z1 for the US market and the second is a smaller smartphone with high end specifications.

The Sony Xperia Z1, see the CNET UK review, has been available for a few months, including in the US as an unlocked model. Yesterday T-Mobile USA announced a US carrier variant, the Xperia Z1s, is coming soon.

The Z1s has an improved water resistant rating, from IP57 to IP58, so that it can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes, rather than just dunked. Folks at CES have been taking photos with the camera button with the smartphone underwater.

I considered picking one of these unlocked models up over the past couple of months since I am often outside in the rain and could use a water resistant phone. The camera looks solid, but I have also read that the display could use some work. I will try to get some hands-on time with this new phone soon.

Specs include a Snapdragon 800 2.2 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 3,000 mAh battery, and 20.7 megapixel camera. The Xperia Z1s will be available from T-Mobile on 22 January.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Last year, HTC, Samsung, and others released mini versions of their high end smartphones. These models generally used lower end specifications and the manufacturers seemed led to tone down the internals just because of the smaller form factor.

Thankfully, Sony revealed the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact that finally offers consumers high end specs in a smaller form factor. I know people like my wife prefer a device like the HTC One Mini and if Sony brings this Xperia Z1 Compact to the US she may be picking one up.

The Xperia Z1 Compact has a 4.3 inch display, 720p display, 2,300 mAh battery, 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM, and a 20.7 megapixel camera. The Compact is also made in black, white, bright lime, and pink.
