Singapore, 31 May, 2000 -- CET Technologies Pte Ltd (CET), a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Electronics (ST Elect) announced the release of its commercially available, and probably the world's first, proprietary Conditional Access (CA) system for Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) based on the ETSI Eureka 147 standard. With CET's Eureka 147 DABOne CA system, content providers can now offer subscription-based multimedia services to their targeted market segment via broadcasting.

DAB is the latest digital technology in the radio industry and has been labeled the "sound of the future". Singapore is the first Asian country to offer DAB broadcast with one key broadcaster here offering six DAB program channels to-date. DAB offers many advantages over existing Frequency Modulation (FM) radios.

· DAB receivers are capable of producing crystal-clear sounds comparable to CD-quality.

· DAB receivers are designed for use in moving vehicles, and platforms.

· DAB is designed for multimedia transmission such that graphic pictures, textual, digital audio signals and even moving video information.

CET has been involved in DAB research and development since early 1999. CET markets a full feature DAB receiver and is now able to offer a complete CA solution to content providers who are keen to offer subscription-based programs. The DABOne CA System will enable content providers to offer pay audio, data and even moving video services to targeted market segments via Terrestrial DAB system.

Mr Ng Chong Khim, General Manager of CET Technologies feels that, "This is an exciting new format that will allow content providers to broadcast better quality sound and programmes to their audience and with CET's DABOne, content providers are able to handle subscription-based services. Currently, CET is in the process of delivering the DABOne CA System to a local cable content program provider, who plans to offer their two subscription based Audio programs via DAB in the near future."

DABOne CA System
CET's DABOne CA System consists of three basic components, viz; D-CAS module, D-SMS module and the CA enabled DAB Multimedia Receiver module (DMR). The basic system has a wide range of system features for multimedia applications and it is also scalable to permit the evolution of services. The individual modules are :
· D-CAS Module:
This is the heart of DABOne CA System, providing the necessary control on the audio and data streams prior to the DAB data multiplexer. This makes the broadcast service incomprehensible to unauthorised users with a conventional DAB receiver, adding to the security of transmissions.
· D-SMS Module:
This module enables content providers to grant or deny individual subscribers remote access to their service. It can also serve as a subscriber database management system. Furthermore, it can also monitor the quality of DAB signal received for QOS purpose as well as authenticating the transmitted subscriber's access code via a special DAB receiver.
· DMR-CA Module:
This is a complete standalone DAB receiver capable of providing audio and data outputs in both normal and CA-enabled mode operations.

The DABOne CA System is suited for close user group applications, such as
· Mobile Wireless Portal containing intranet website
· Stream audio, data and moving video subscription services
