China home to 1.1B mobile phone users

Summary:The number of mobile phone users in the world's most populous market is now at 1.095 billion, driven by growing adoption of 3G devices among consumers.

The number of mobile phone users in China has risen to hit 1.095 billion as of the end of October, and this is helped by consumers purchasing 3G handsets.

Citing figures from the Minisitry of Industry and Information Technology, China Daily reported Friday that 109.2 million mobile phone users were added to the exising user base in the first 10 months of 2012.

The growth was spurred on by the number of people buying 3G-enabled handsets, as the number of consumers who did so increased by 83.99 million during the same period to reach 212.4 million, the report added.

As a result, China's telecome sector reported 893.7 billion yuan (US$142.3 billion) in business revenues--which was a 9.2 percent improvement from the first 10 months of 2011. Mobile telecommunications services grew 11.1 percent to 658.6 billion yuan (US$104.9 billion) and accounted for 73.7 percent of the sector's total revenues, it stated.
