A provider of networking and communications technologies, Cisco Systems was founded by a small group of computer scientists from Stanford University in 1984.

Headquartered in San Jose, California, the technology bellwether has a worforce of more than 67,647 employees around the world.

The company's core development areas are in routing and switching, and it also provides advanced technologies such as IP communications, wireless LAN, home networking, application networking services, network security, storage area networking and video systems.

For its first fiscal quarter 2009, Cisco posted an 8 percent year-on-year increase in sales to US$10.3 billion from US$9.6 billion. However, year-on-year net profit was flat at US$2.2 billion.
