Cloud compliance: What you need to know in US, EMEA, Asia, and Australia

Summary:We sum up the global regulatory, compliance, and governance issues that companies need to be prepared for when they move applications to the cloud.

One of the biggest question marks — and occasionally the biggest roadblocks — to shifting from a traditional application to a cloud app (aka Software as a Service) is the legitimate issue of compliance and governance, especially in relation to data.

Since ZDNet and TechRepublic have joined forces on a big special feature on Software as a Service, we knew we had to put this issue front and center. And the more we looked at it, the more we realized that it's not something you can easily handle in one article or from one perspective, as there are different issues to consider based on which part of the world you are located and which industries you operate in.

As a result, we decided to tackle the issue with a combination of global perspective and local focus by taking advantage of the expertise that our worldwide editorial department has in the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

We have a report from each of these four regions that summarizes what IT departments need to know about the regulatory and compliance concerns before making the leap to SaaS. While this information isn't comprehensive, it will get you started and serve as a jumping off point to learn more.

Even if your company currently operates in just one region, the information on the additional regions can be useful. Your company may want to expand to new markets in the future. But even if that's not the case, learning what's happening in other regions can help you catch wind of regulatory trends that could eventually color the compliance picture in your country.

Here are our four reports:
