The Commonwealth Bank confirmed the outage to ZDNet Australia in a statement this evening.

"The Commonwealth Bank is aware some customers may encounter difficulties when using ATMs and EFTPOS this afternoon. We are working to resolve full services as a matter of priority, and apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused," the bank said in a statement.

ZDNet Australia understands that the Commonwealth Bank customers are being asked to sign for their purchases when using EFTPOS at some retailers because of the issue.

The outage also appears to have struck the bank's 24-hour customer hotline. The 24-hour number provides an automated message that apologises for the inconvenience and blames the problem on a "technical issue".

CommBank told ZDNet Australia that it had restored ATM and EFTPOS services at 7:25pm AEST, but added that call centre services were still unavailable.

The outage comes as the bank this week reported another record annual profit of $6.4 billion and promised to be rid of its old core banking system by next year.

CommBank hasn't been the only bank to be set back by outages. Last month payments were delayed for Westpac customers after a glitch in a batch process delayed payment processing. In May, Westpac also had issues, deciding to turn off its own EFTPOS and ATM network following an air-conditioning failure in its datacentre.

However, the biggest outage came in November last year. On 24 November 2010, NAB's transaction system was thrown into chaos. NAB CEO Cameron Clyne said that there had been a coding error, which combined with a software amendment, caused duplicate transactions to occur. The problems left thousands of customers waiting for pay packets.

Updated at 7:50pm, 12 August 2011: updated ATM/EFTPOS service status.
