The Commonwealth Bank today released its Kaching app for iPhone, which enables the phone to make mobile, Facebook, email and contactless payments.

Users don't have to be Commonwealth Bank customers to receive payments, with non-bank customers directed to an external collection site.

Those who want to purchase an iCarte case for the iPhone can also make payments with their phone using MasterCard's contactless PayPass terminals. The case has a near-field communications (NFC) chip, which facilitates the transmission of data over a range of approximately 10cm. The Commonwealth Bank said it had processed over 1 million MasterCard PayPass transactions in October. The case costs $49.95, with an additional cost of $5 for postage and handling. Users can order the case through the app.

The app also allows access to a customer's account balance, BPAY and transfers.

Over 18,500 people preregistered to download the app on release, according to the bank. It will be compatible with iOS 4.3 and above, with cases designed for the iPhone 4 and 4S. The bank is developing an Android app.
