Compaq still the brand to beat in PC sales

PC shipments grew 17.8 per cent to 70.9 million units in 1996 despite disappointing growth in the consumer sector and some countries including Germany and Japan, according to Dataquest market research.

Compaq retains its worldwide leadership position (7.1 million units) followed by IBM (6.1 million) and Packard Bell NEC (4.3 million). In the US, Dell (up 71 per cent) slipped past Apple (down 31 per cent) for the first time to become the fourth biggest PC maker.
