Hi, this is Alan Wan from Dell.
Today I am here to share with you how Small and Medium Businesses can create a cost effective, secure and highly available infrastructure using virtualization technology.
Traditionally, to have highly available infrastructure is very expensive - you need multiple redundant servers, expensive SAN solutions, expensive software, and highly skilled engineers to deploy and maintain the infrastructure.
Without high availability, critical server failure will always result in loss of productivity and loss of revenue.
With virtualization technology, you can now create a cost effective, secure and highly available infrastructure. Let me show you how this can be done.
The first component you need is virtualization software like VMware vSphere. With virtualization software, you can consolidate multiple physical servers into fewer physical servers to improve your total cost of ownership and to increase server utilization.
A virtualization software also allows you to do automatic load balancing of your workload between multiple physical servers. It also comes with high availability features that can automatically restart your application on another server in the event of a server failure.
The next component you need is a virtualized ISCSI storage, such as Dell EqualLogic. Virtualized ISCSI storage is very easy to maintain, it is very cost effective, and it comes with many advanced features such as snapshot, cloning and mirroring technolgy.
The snapshot and mirroring technology can be easily integrated with your backup and disaster recovery infrastructure to improve your backup and recovery capability.
With your snapshot technology, you can quickly create multiple copies of your data for backup, while not affecting user access to your data.
In the event that you need to restore your data, you can quickly restore from your snapshot copy, instead of restoring from your backup tape library which is usually very slow.
You can also copy your data using mirroring technology to a remote ISCSI storage, to provide you with a disaster recovery capability.
With this highly available and secure infrastructure, you can ensure that your applications are always available to your end users, you can improve your total cost of ownership by consolidating multiple physical servers into fewer servers, and by consolidating your storage requirements. At the same time, you can improve your backup and disaster recovery capability. You can also save energy cost by reducing your power and cooling requirement in your environment.
As you can see, you can create a cost effective, secure and highly available infrastructure using virtualization technology.
