The federal government is preparing to kick off the process of sourcing the information and communications technology (ICT) needs of a new AU$300 million Defence headquarters joint operations command facility to be built near Canberra.

Defence Minister Brendon Nelson said registrations of interest in the project would be sought from the ICT community from Monday, with the contract expected to be let in October.

A request for tender to be issued on 10 April would call for the design, building, integrating, testing and commissioning of specialised C4I (command, control, communications, computing and intelligence) systems for the facility, according to Nelson.

The facility -- to be located at Bungendore near the Australian Capital Territory -- is the first Defence infrastructure project to be built and managed via private financing.

The facility is due to become operational in the last quarter of 2008.
